As we walk out into daily summer sun, it’s not only important to think about skin care, but lip care.
According to local beauty care expert Laura Linsenmayer, who owns ROOTS the Beauty Underground in Laguna Beach, the lips are an often-neglected part of beauty care.
“I always say, ‘Your lips need to be treated as their own ecosystem,’” she says.
Linsenmayer says many clients complain about suffering from dry lips.
“They simply need to gently remove the dead skin cells,” she says. “With a thin layer of dead cells coating the lips, moisture is unable to penetrate therefore resulting in chronic dryness.”
An important concern for the lips during the summer months is sun protection. She says to always remember to use a mineral SPF lip balm & gently exfoliate regularly.
“Exfoliating will assist in oxygenating the cells, bringing blood flow to the surface, resulting in a pink, plump pout,” she says.
Linsenmayer Product Recommendations:
Balmy Nights by ILIA – an exfoliator in stick form with an extremely fine grit created from volcanic ash blended with a variety of organic plant oils.
Balmy Days by ILIA – a moisturizing blend of organic plant oils.

Long-lasting Lip Color
Orange County-based Debbie Harrington (IG: Longlastinglipsticklover) is a distributor of SeneGence International’s LipSense, which boasts color that can last four to 18 hours.
She answered some questions about the line & lip care:
The Orange County Independent: How does LipSense compare to other lip brands?
Debbie Harrington: LipSense by SeneGence International has a patented formula which creates a molecular bond to the lips & keeps the color on much longer than any other lipstick or long-lasting lip color. It can last from four to 18 hours. Several tests have been conducted by consumers, showing that out of all the claimed “long-lasting lip colors,” LipSense outlasted them all & passed smudge tests, kiss tests, napkin tests, food tests & more.
TOCI: What are some issues that happen around the heat & sun of summer?
DH: If the lips aren’t protected during the hot summer months, when the sun is at its strongest, they are inclined to dry out, burn, chap, crack & won’t hold a lipstick color on as long, since the skin on the lips is so delicate & prone to premature aging & wrinkling.
TOCI: What are some tips to prevent this?
DH: Use a LipSense color during the summer, especially spending a day in the hot, glaring sun. You can even wear it at the beach or by the pool. It is waterproof, & there are plenty of shades available to give you that no-lipstick look, if that is what you are aiming for. LipSense has no SPF in it. The concentrated properties of the color pigments are what completely block the sun & protect the delicate skin on the lips from the sun’s harsh rays.
TOCI: Anything else you’d like to add?
DH: One tube of LipSense can last up to six months, if used every day, but many people like to buy several colors to mix, & create new shades for themselves, which makes it very economical… Buy two or three colors & you are actually buying numerous colors for yourself that could last up to three years… Lastly, it is gluten-free, wax-free, GMO-free, vegan, nontoxic & not tested on animals.
